Goodreads Description :
The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace has been freed from her captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive to rescue him, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing–but so is the boy she hates, Sebastian, the son of her father Valentine: a son determined to succeed where their father failed, and bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

No magic the Clave can summon can locate either boy, but Jace cannot stay away—not from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith’s dying magic has wrought—Jace is no longer the boy she loved. He and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become what he most feared: a true servant of Valentine’s evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. Will the Shadowhunters hesitate to kill one of their own?

Only a small band of Clary and Jace’s friends and family believe that Jace can still be saved — and that the fate of the Shadowhunters’ future may hinge on that salvation. They must defy the Clave and strike out on their own. Alec, Magnus, Simon and Isabelle must work together to save Jace: bargaining with the sinister Faerie Queen, contemplating deals with demons, and turning at last to the Iron Sisters, the reclusive and merciless weapons makers for the Shadowhunters, who tell them that no weapon on this earth can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. Their only chance of cutting Jace free is to challenge Heaven and Hell — a risk that could claim any, or all, of their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary has gone into the heart of darkness, to play a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing the game is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she even still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

My Thought :
City of Lost Souls start where the previous book left off. After Simon destroys Lilith, Sebastian and Jace disappear. The clave start the search for them but still get no result, so they deproritize the search. Clary and friends decide to take the matters into their own hands. When Jace comes to meet Clary, she finally knows that Jace and Sebastian are bound to each other. If something happen to Jace, it also happen to Sebastian, and vice versa. With Simon's help, Clary follows team evil to find out what Sebastian plan to do. At the other side, team good try to find a way to break the strong bound between Jace and Sebastian. Can they break the bound and save Jace? And what is Sebastian hiding from Clary?

Just like the other Cassandra Clare's book, I absolutely love the book. I love the characters, and in this book I'm more in love with Simon. We also can see different Jace in CoLS. In this book, we can find more romance (you can see it from the cover, right?), not only between Jace and Clary but also between the other characters. At the other side, I also think the book have less action than what I expected. Honestly, when I saw the book trailer I expect more action from the book.

The twists and turns in CoLS make me hold my breath. It is mindblowing. And the cliffhanger ending is a great way to end the book. It spark my curiosity for the next book. I can't wait to read the last book in this series. After all, I really enjoy the book and I'm highly recommend the book. If you haven't read the series yet, you have to read it now.

I give City of Lost Souls 4,5 out of 5 stars.

  1. In City of lost souls Lilith, the demon has been destroyed and Jace and Sebastian are missing. Clary, not getting any help from the Clave, decides to go out and find them herself. Alec, Simon and Isabelle tag along, of course!!
When Clary and Jace meet she feels that he's changed. Hanging around her evil brother, Sebastian, has made Jace into a different person. He's acting like him and Sebastian are close friends, and that he actually likes him. They soon find out that Jace has been bound to Sebastian, and killing one of them would kill the other as well. Since the Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, Clary and her friends must find a way to save Jace.

The cover of this book was so different from the other book covers in this series. But I do feel like it did justice to the story. There was a lot more romance than there was action, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Since the previous books were all so action packed I feel it was the right move by Clare to slow down a little.
The first 100 or so pages were a little slow, but as soon as Jace came back in the picture the story started moving, fast.
I did love the chemistry between Clary and Jace, again! Jace was hot as a baddie!! Still as charming as always. Clary believed that Jace could be saved, it was kind of heartbreaking actually. But I loved how Isabelle, Alec, Magnus and Simon got involved. I had missed Magnus!!
I loved how Cassandra focused a lot on Isabelle and Simon's relationship as well.
